Kiwi had 36 swimmers entered for the 3 day 4 session event. It was a fantastic weekend with some great swimming from the team. 31 out of 36 swimmers gained at least one personal best (86% of the team).
Competition was fairly predictable with only a couple of surprises, Wanganui's new initiative of amalgamating the local clubs into one regional team put them in good stead as it was fierce competition for 1st place with Bell Block from Taranaki & Wanganui taking out 53 golds between them.
In terms of medals Kiwi did very well this year with 56 medals in total, 9 Gold, 24 Silver & 23 Bronze. We still have plenty of work to contend for the top spot but we have an excellent group of young swimmers coming through with a fantastic & professional attitude to competing.
Special mention
- Once again another outstanding performance by Bridget Maher who set a new Manawatu Age Group record for the 800m freestyle (9:16.78).
- Angus Brenkly who took 0:31.53 secs off his 800m SC time.
- Sam Love who took 14 sec off his100m freestyle.
- Muriel Eade who qualified for NZ Springs.
- Regan Kohunui who pb all of his events and a massive 0:10.59 off his 100m Butterfly and also qualified for Div 2.
- John Joe Elkington who took off 0:10.63 off his 200m Breaststroke.
- Luke Garland who took off 0:11.10 off his 200m Breaststroke.
- Sam Regan who took 0:10.61 off his 200m freestyle.
- Jessica Love who qualified for Div 2.
- Mohamed Beshlawi who qualified for 2 more NZ springs events.
- Ben Elkington who took 0:09.16 off his 200 IM & racking up 7 medals from 9 finals.
A huge thank you to Andrew, Kiwi's medal haul was almost 80% of the combined tally for all the other Manawatu clubs, this can be attributed to the "can do" attitude of our swimmers and also a lot more swimmers were asking Andrew how they might improve for their next race, it was great to see swimmers taking advantage of Andrews Knowledge.
